Spacial Order and Control: An introduction to the Ruqu'a & Diwani Calligraphy Styles
Arabic Calligraphy is the practiced art of spacial harmony, order and control.
Level I: Introduction to Arabic Calligraphy, Ruqu'a & Diwani Styles
A free 16-hour workshop, held in four double-weekend sessions. lasting 2 hours each.
Workshop Objectives:
1. To learn the simple Ruqu'a style. Students familiarize themselves with the Arabic alphabet, focusing esthetics, order and scale. They will learn about paper texture, visual harmony in spacial control, and how to skillfully use their Qalam (pen).
2. To use calligraphy as a language of abstract and artistic expression, independent of the actual language written.

Where do workshops take place?
These workshop take place in the Islamic Studies Centre, in the Albayzin Mosque in Granada. Other sessions are held at the University of Granada, for local students.

Skills students are expected to develop: Level I:
Historical introduction, material and techniques, introduction to Ruqu'a and Diwani caligraphy styles: The student will receive theoretical information about caligraphy, the materias and the techniques throughout the workshop sessions.
The Ruqu’a (order and detail) : We start with the simple skill practise of the qalam through this caligraphy style the student will perfect the technique and learn to write in an orderly manner focusing on a simple distribution of the available space, trace control and visual harmony. The studens that aren't familiarised with the Arabic alphabet will hereby have an intense exercise in arabic writing.
The Diwani (Freedom and agility):
This line is necesary to obtain agility in large scale movements, since with the previous (Ruqu'a style) we will have achieved many formal rules and strategies in artistic writing. The objective is to loosen the wrist while preserving the esthetics and proportions of letters; here the letters will adopt different forms and have a more lively feeling. The beguinning of artistic compositions.
Course layout:
The workshop is carried out over 1 month, in 4 double weekend sessions of 2 h. each session, allowing for a small break between each single session. The sessions will beguin at the Andalusi Workshop centre in Atarfe at 5 pm, on the given dates. Please inquire for other programs or tailored made workshops towards your trip.
Week 1.
Sesion 1:
Introduction, alphabet learning: separated letters.
Cutting and preparation of the qalam (pen).
First Ruqu'a exercises.
Sesión 2:
Continuation of practises, separated letters, middle and ending connecting letters.
Exercises with words and phrases.
Week 2.
Sesion 3:
Exercises in scale and form, the letters and how they transform according to their placing in each word.
Agility exercises and controling the writing angle.
Sesión 4:
Scale exercises, complex cases, repeating letters in the same word, initiation to harmony exercises (word proportion, horizontal line and the position of paralel higher letters such as Aleef, la Laam, etc.)
Week 3.
Sesion 5:
Long phrases of more than one line, practical concepts towards a creative artistic expression.
Trace and force control.
The separated letters in the Diwani; to draw with emotion and internal sensation, exercises of emotional expression through the lettering. Choosing a phrase or sentence towards our last exercise.
Sesión 6
Connecting letters in the Diwani.
Making of a first expressive work, corrections and recommendations.
Week 4.
Work conclusion, further practises and instructions. Correcting of individual bad habbits. Closing of the workshop, farewells and informal debates upon the experience and knowledge achieved.
Throughout the sessions we will be explaining the origin and development of Arabic caligraphy from it's roots untill modern times, allowing the students to learn the paper preparation skills and in particular to be able to write their own works, make their own ink mixes, etc.
