Happy New Year! The pilgrimage month is over, people have returned to their beloved ones and are celebrating their Hajj. I ask Allah that he facilitates all of us to journey to Mecca and Madinah one day and accept the Hajj of those that have been. This is a time to renew intentions with this new year and a new decade.
We are now in the year 1440 of the Hijra. Let’s reflect back to a few years ago…
Around 700 years ago to date the Alhambra Palace was being finished. It’s intricate design, as much a mathematical miracle as a breathtaking masterpiece. The walls are covered in calligraphy and intricate Islamic patterns flooding the walls. It was a great achievement for the Muslims and it is just incredible to imagine how they would have lived between those walls in such tranquillity. It is the best example of the culture and art of Al-Andalus and the Moors in Spain. It was completed towards the end of the Muslim rule of Spain by Yusuf I and later by Muhammad V. It is such a testament to the skill of such fine workmanship that existed at the time. The artisans, craftsmen and builders would have been highly trained in all areas to have been asked to complete such an important task. It is breathtaking to stand in the Mosque gardens, today, and contemplate on the work that went into building the incredible palace in front of you.
It is a pleasure today to wander the palaces of the Alhambra and the Generalife and reminisce on how they would have lived. If you haven’t been, you must try and go.
