discover the secrets of Muslim Spain
This 9 night group tour is scheduled regularly to start from Casablanca, Morocco.
This tour is designed to give you a rich taste of Moroccan culture and a broad introduction to Al-Andalus before achieving our primary objective reaching Andalusia’s main capitals to «Discover the Secrets of Muslim Spain».
Independent or guided leisurely extension arrangements and connections to other cities are available upon request to our bookings & administration team.
Our stay in Casablanca will not be very long. We will visit the mosque of Hassan II, enjoy a brief walk and snacks, then head out to Rabat, where we will spend the night.
*Please schedule flights for an early arrival in time to view this site and reach Rabat within reasonable time to rest for your first night in Morocco.
In the morning we will receive a formal introduction to Rabat , the capital of Morocco. Though brief, our time there will be valuable to highlight the capital of a culturally diverse and very rich country.
After this and depending on the time when we finish we may lunch on the way or at the main square at Mekness. Our intention is to move onto Fes and check-inn to our hotel there for more comfort, then leave to Fez for an afternoon and evening visit there including dinner before returning to our hotel in Fes to sleep. After a quick first contact with the Medina in Fez, will allow us for a jump-start into a more formal city tour the next morning, allowing us to enjoy the city at a more leisurely pace on the next day.
Fès is known for its handicrafts, and particularly for its famous blue and white tiles. Arabic is the main language in Morocco but French is widely spoken so it gets easier to get around compared to many other Arabic countries. People in Fès are exceptionally friendly and hospitable, and they love to talk to travellers and to proudly boast about their city. If you speak with locals for any length of time, be prepared to be invited to their house for tea – this is a genuine and innocent offer, so do not shy away from it, as it is a great way to get to know people and to get a feel for life here.
We will start the day out with a second breakfast and some shopping time in Mekness, before heading to visit the Mausoleum of Mulay Idriss, in the mountains nearby, and on our way North through them.
On this day, having seen the more important Imperial and spiritual capitals of Morocco, we will start to experience it’s rural livelihood and the richness of it’s natural landscapes and mountains. Here we will come to know other cultural pockets present in Morocco which are very popular and important, the ‘Jibly’ mountain cultures which belong to different ethnic backgrounds we may consider ‘arabised’ Berbers indigenous to Morocco nowadays, particularly to the North.
The route to Cordoba is 350km but we will break it down with stops at every 140 km for site viewing, meals and prayers at actual mosques available along the route.
We will receive an introductory summary upon the history of Iberia, it’s origins, population and religious diversity, diversity & division in the Christian Spain before Islam, the origin of Islam and Al-Andalus until the arrival of AbdulRahmãn I, the Ummayad Emir founder of Córdoba as the Capital of Al-Andalus (300-750E.C).
In the morning we shall have our guided visit of the Umayyad Mosque of Cordoba, one of the oldest structures still standing from the time Muslims ruled Al-Andalus in the late 8th century. After, we continue to Madinat Al-Zahra, the Caliph’s court city palace’s archaeological site; research & exhibition centre.
We will reserve the afternoon, back in town, for your own free and easy planning. You may enjoy exploring the old medina by foot on your own, while also finding traditional and modern shops within the pedestrian city centre of Cordoba.
The route from Cordoba to Granada views of many castles, towers, ‘zagras’, white villages, where we can recreate a vivid historical vision of this whole period, the last Muslim lands of Al-Andalus, into the former Kingdom of ‘Garnata’. We will be cruising along sites that used to be a 250 years border between the Muslim Kingdom of Granada and the four Spanish Christian Kingdoms, after their conquest of Cordoba. A quick stop along the way will allow travellers to gain some knowledge about the Olive Oil industry, enabling us also to purchase olive oil & traditional rural products, with the best quality and price.
Guided visit to the Alhambra palatial town, including the Nasrid Palaces, Alkasaba fortress, Generalife summer palace & gardens, and the old medina of the Alhambra. Afterwards, we move on to visit the old medina of «Garnata» and it’s main areas, divisions, and city walls. We will visit the Albayzin Mosque, next to the Mirador de San Nicolás, most famous viewing point of Granada, beauty views to the Alhambra.
After a lunch break, we walk down to the town centre, visit the ‘souq’ streets, and the area’s most historical points. After due resting, you will have the afternoon free to make your own plans for shopping or extra optional activities available in Granada. You may enjoy free time in the modern town which is a fusion of Souq markets, old alleyways, river side & the active modern city appeals.
We will visit the last muslim territory of Al Andalus, after the Chrisitan Kings have given to Jews and Muslims the last oportunity to convert to Christianity or go in exile.
Departure transfer is included by privately or as a group from Granada to Malaga or Madrid Airports. We do however recommend to extend your trip from here independently at your own pace, counting on our full support whilst planning and also in action, should you require guidance or help with any city connections in Spain or through to Europe don’t hesitate in asking us, you can start by browsing after sliding the tab above to the right, onto ‘Private Tour Extensions’.
