This schedule is intended as a flexible introduction to Al-Andalus & Iberia; the route can be extended by our extra ‘City Escapes’ to Madrid, Seville, Barcelona, Lisbon or Morocco, before or after the main group tour.

A guided approach to the origin of Islam in Iberia, Al-Andalus. A story of unity vs division and dispersion, the Golden Age of Islam in Europe, it’s height and downfall.

We will be moving through the most picturesque Spanish landscapes, while following the River Guadal Quivir (Kabir) South into Seville, or the mountain ranges which crown the prior kingdom of Granada, the last Muslim Kingdom of Al-Andalus, holding the Alhambra as the highlight of a lost heaven. Once in Granada, after touring the Alhambra and historical quarters of the city, we will be able to relax and enjoy whilst shop or prepare for any extra activities, extra night time visits & walks or workshop programs available for booking during the tour.

Day 1 – Group Meeting at Madrid International Airport. Madrid & Toledo

Airport welcome & introduction to Madrid, the current capital of Spain. On our way through the capital, Madrid, we will have a city panoramic, including views to the Royal Palace, souvenir stop at Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas, coffee stop at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. After our introduction through Madrid, the capital of Spain, Madrid, we start travelling South to Toledo, Capital of Iberia, Medieval, pre-and post-Muslim Spain. Welcome to the ‘medina’ or ancient town of Toledo, we explore the medina of ‘Toleytula’ from within and indulge in some first shopping around the ‘souq’ streets before dinner within the medina.

Transportation is served in distinct manners, you have a choice of VIP or Full Coach, Courtesy Economy choice or an independent drive your self, rental option. A brief introduction to Madrid’s capital will lead our way to an introductory history to Al-Andalus during your approximately 60 minute drive to Toledo, where this ‘Travel Plan’ suggests you should spend your first night.

Welcome presentations, introduction to Andalusia and Spain on our way to Madrid.

We start out this tour at Madrid, the capital of modern Spain, moving straight into our historical narration by staying at Toledo, Medieval capital of Iberia, ‘mosaic’ and ‘bridge’ between the three main cultures & religious traditions in Al-Andalus. After Toledo, we move south along the ‘Route of Don Quixote’, through Castilla La Mancha, to Andalusia while receiving an introductory summary of the history of Iberia, its origins, population and religious diversity, in Christian Spain before. As we move into Andalusia, we will also be shifting in time, to Al-Andalus. The tour will also present the deeper roots of Iberian tradition and the Moorish-Morris fusion into our modern time through the very words of reading our Spanish top literature master Miguel de Cervantes.

 

Toledo was the Medieval capital of Iberia, becoming though time a true ‘mosaic’ and ‘bridge’ between the three main cultures & religious traditions in Al-Andalus.

Day 2 – Córdoba, Capital of the Umayyads.

This morning we will take our last romantic looks at the city of Toledo, capital of former Castille a flagstone in Spanish history and culture. After Toledo, we move south along the ‘Route of Don Quixote’, through Castilla La Mancha, to Andalusia while receiving an introductory summary of the history of Iberia, its origins, population and religious diversity, in Christian Spain before. As we move into Andalusia, we will also be shifting in time, to Al-Andalus. Welcome presentations, introduction to Andalusia and Spain on our way to Córdoba.

In the afternoon we shall have our guided visit to the Umayyad Mosque of Cordoba, one of the oldest structures still standing when Muslims ruled Al-Andalus in the late 8th century, flagstone of the Umayyad period of Al-Andalus.

Allotted free time is given for meals, prayer, rest and shopping in the afternoon. Besides a lively town centre and many shops, there are today’s three active mosques in Córdoba worth visiting. This could be an opportunity to meet some locals while walking your way around town.

Welcome Dinner in Cordoba’s Historical Medina

Brief presentation of the city and dinner in Cordoba's most ancient town.

Besides a lively town centre and many shops, there are today’s three active mosques in Córdoba worth visiting. This could be an opportunity to meet some local Muslims while touring around town.

After an active day, we will take you back into town for a night walk around Cordoba’s Mosque/Cathedral. You are free to spend your evening in Cordoba at a traditional, courtyard tea salon, where we offer a very special welcome dinner for you to opt-in along with your tour bookings!

Day 3 – Excursion to Sevilla and continue to Granada.

It is time to continue to know the capital of Andalusia today, Seville.

Route Alternative, continuing to Granada, after Sevilla: Mountain Route into Granada.

On our way from Cordoba to Seville apart from some extra morning rest, we will be cruising through the most valuable Andalusian lands, surrounding the River Guadalquivir, rich in crops. While we will also be driving past some of the capitals known for the specialisation and development arround Islamic Sciences in the past. Most importantly we will view Écija, and Carmona, as we drive past.

Guided visits in Seville’s historical center including the Alkasr Royal Palaces & Gardens, Cathedral of Seville, modern Giralda and also have a bright opportunity to check out the ruins of the Almohad courtyard and minaret. We will also walk through the old medina & Jewish quarters and study the city wall remains. Once a rival kingdom to the Ummayad, ruled by the Almowahidin dinasty, today Seville triumphs as the capital of Andalusia. Seville is a city where we can witness the fusion of the Iberian paradox. Guided visits to Seville’s historical centre including the Alkasr Royal Palaces & Gardens, Cathedral of Seville contains some artefacts of the former Almohad mosque courtyard and minaret. And a final walk along the old Medina and city walls, Parque de Maria Luisa and Plaza de España. We suggest you take a leisurely evening plan enjoying walks or rides along the riverside and pedestrian city centre before we head back to Cordoba. If you prefer to leave Seville for a more lengthily experience, we will advise you to take this day as a leisurely day in Cordoba, perhaps fill in with some extra city tours and activities, and add Seville as a separate “City Escape extension”, which we can also handle and connect via a choice of private transportation methods, from Granada, after the group tour is over.

Again from Granada, we reach the capital of Spain. Madrid highlights can be carried out by a hop-on hop-off panoramic bus tour. Starting out from Plaza de España you can discover some of the main ancient gates to the Medina of Madrid, from Atocha to Paseo del Prado, the Arts district, Castellana Street through Madrid’s center to Puerta de Alcalá and the Plaza de Toros de las Ventas. Visit of the Real Madrid Football Club Stadium, Santiago Bernabeu, to complete the official tour of the stadium, which concludes naturally in the official Adidas shop of the Real Madrid Football Club.

Later, we will invite you to discover the highest range shopping area in the center of Madrid, Gran Vía Street, contains some of the most prestigious window shopping brands. After our formal introduction and lunch, we are now free for some shopping and leisure at your own choice. There are a range of optional activities we can provide, simply ask our manager’s for advice about the free leisure evening programs and our favourite dinner options in Madrid.

Leisurely shopping time in and spend our last night before departure the next day. Our private tours are service focused. Accommodation being a compliment which we must add to the listed cost for these type of variable date selection tours. We offer an economical range of tours for smaller group tours of under 7 participants for which we implement a ‘Courtesy Driver’ policy through our own local tour managers. Whether on your own or as a group, the most cost effective, best value tours are those where we also include the hotel package to a set date and you may join on a per person basis or as a group, into a larger set group tour.

We provide solid standards for any group type, we will know which standard to adopt according to your hotel selection, which we take at a minimum 3-4 stars throughout, as you will find a sample of listed in our specific indepenedent Hotel Tour Package offers, for every Travel Plan by Al-Andalus Experience.
